Howdy folks. It seems we have begun to move beyond the negativity that has dominated this site in recent weeks (wishful thinking I know). So here is an experiment in positive energy. The 90s (Vince era) as we know is the most maligned and least understood of all the excellent eras of the Grateful Dead. So I challenge you all to list at least one thing you like about 90s era Dead. Those who have nothing nice to say - move along (we'll see who the true assholes are!) I'll get things started with a few reasons(in no particular order) 1) Garcia was still with us (at least most of the time)! 2) Days Between - Garcia's last contribution - and a beautiful one at that 3) So Many Roads - One of Garcia's finest - a fitting tune for the end times 4) 10/1/94 - the last truly epic Dead show IMHO How about you?

all of marsalis' gigs were in the 90's. 90-91 is a top notch perios. after that you need to find the gold but there is some stuff.

Definitely dig So many Roads and Standing on the Moon.
Best versions as far as I can tell are:
So many Roads:1994-09-18 - Shoreline Amphith
Standing on the moon:1995-06-30 - Three Rivers Stad
Estimated Prophet:3-21-90 Beautiful solo

You cannot dismiss the the 90's there were lots of good shows but i think what came into play were stellar songs as opposed to stellar shows.

Yeah,Days between is a great song that im a big fan of.That being said,almont all of them were total crap.Theres only like 2 or 3 good ones out there.
So Many Roads-epic!
There was some great shows all throughout the 90s..some great ones even in 95 too(2-21-95) comes to mind,also the Box of rain night at rfk was sweet too.Ill take 91-95 over 83-86 any day.I thought the dead were at their worst in the early-mid 80s(except for pre-71,which i dont even listen too)

I saw a lot of great shows between 90-95, especially 90-91. The nice thing about the immediate post-Brent era was that they weren't playing the mediocre new songs that would become more prominent later (Wave to the Wind, Eternity, Long, Long, Long, Long, Long Way to Go Home, etc..).

I saw something like 12 shows in '91 -- spring, summer and fall -- and all had memorable highlights. None of these are considered 'classic' shows for 1991 (for reasons that I don't really understand), yet most were pretty great.

So, in addition to the shows from '91 that everyone talks about (MSG, Shoreline, Greensboro -- which are, indeed, great) here are my recommendations for often-overlooked greatness from 1991:

3-17-91, Cap Center - Reuben and Cherise breakout. Five songs before Drums, including a GREAT (and I mean great) China->Rider, and the second New Speedway since 1970. Also one of the best Black Peter's I ever heard. Total goosebumps material.

3-21-91, Cap Center - A well-circulated bootleg back in the day. Look at this second set, 'Stir It Up Jam'?? Are you kidding me? Dead history: Victim Or The Crime-> Scarlet Begonias-> Fire On The Mountain, Stir It Up Jam-> Drums-> Jam-> Goin' Down The Road Feelin' Bad-> Throwing Stones-> Not Fade Away, E: Box Of Rain

Really, that entire March 1991 Cap Center run was great. You should really listen to all of them. 3-20 was nice too.

6-20-91, Pine Knob - Second set a Throwin' sandwich. What? The Throwin -> Iko transition still gives me goosebumps: Throwing Stones -> Iko Iko, All Along The Watchtower, Standing On the Moon, He's Gone-> Drums-> Space-> The Wheel-> I Need A Miracle-> Wharf Rat-> Throwing Stones-> Not Fade Away, E: Brokedown Palace

06-22-1991 - Soldier Field - Amazing Shakedown in the two-hole is the show highlight, but also includes an impressive Playin -> Terrapin -> D/S -> Dark Star Instrumental -> Playin Reprise. Great stuff.

09-04-1991 - Richfield Coliseum - An absolutely gaudy 10-song first set to kick off the fall tour (opens with "Let the Good Times Roll"). When does that ever happen? Very high-energy, kick ass show. Maybe the best I saw. Scarlet Begonias -> Fire On The Mountain, Estimated, He's Gone to open the second. A seriously great, great scarlet->fire here. Plus, 'China Doll' out of space.

No one remembers the 3 Rivers '95 show?? It's the goods, probably the last good one, but gets no props b/c there isn't a good recording of it out there.

a) my only Dark Star-
b) 5-31-92 best show I saw in the 90's
c) Tomorrow Never Know's-Baba O'Reily
d)Hornsby on Grand

yes there were others but these were my favs --

I like the 10-01-94 show. Its got a great sound and good energy. In the later years I also like the tone of Bobby's Guitar, although I wish his voice had held up a little better. Its kind of an interesting era and some of the material deserves a chance. Although this isnt my favorite era, I think the Road Trips format would be a great way to present those post Bruce years. One release could sum it up really well. Also how about the 9-24-94 Phil & Friends acoustic show? That has some good highlights including a cool piano solo by Vince on Walkin Blues and a decent Bird Song
